What Is Litecoin (LTC)?

Litecoin is a cryptocurrency, created to facilitate inexpensive, fast, and highly secure blockchain-based payment methods. It launched in October 2011, created by Charlie Lee, a computer scientist and early Bitcoin miner. It was based on the Bitcoin protocol - only 4X more efficient.

Instead of Bitcoin's fixed maximum supply of 21 million coins, Litecoin's is fixed at 84 million. Instead of the 10-minute block processing time on the Bitcoin network, Litecoin processes a block in 2.5 minutes. Simply put, Litecoin is designed to serve as the improved version of Bitcoin.

The altcoin received the warmest welcome in the crypto community. Its prices went on a run and it immediately became one of the most popular coins. Its market soared and LTC was soon a prominent feature on the crypto top 10 lists.

But in 2017, Litecoin founder cashed out his LTC holdings - citing conflict of interest - left the Litecoin foundation, and started working for the Coinbase exchange.

The market interpreted this as an exit scam and LTC token prices embarked on a free fall. It dropped off the list of top 20 most valuable cryptos and the number of wallets holding LTC tokens dropped drastically, signifying a massive dip in investor interest.

In 2021, Charlie got back to the Litecoin foundation. Litecoin has since launched the Mimblewimble upgrade and is reportedly working on more projects aimed at making Litecoin competitive and winning back investor interest in the altcoin.

Is Litecoin (LTC) Worth Investing In?

Litecoin has had its ups and downs. It has its core strengths like speed and low transaction fees which would make it worth investing in as well as its several shortcomings that would make you think twice about investing in the altcoin.

But to best understand if Litecoin is worth investing in, we analyze the reasons to buy Litecoin today and the risks of investing in LTC.

Reasons to Invest In Litecoin (LTC)

  • Potentially high upside: Most analysts feel confident that Litecoin is massively undervalued. They agree that as the altcoin launches more products and wins the crypto community’s trust again, it will correct upwards and catapult investor portfolios by unimaginable rates.
  • Growing adoption: Litecoin is fast in transaction processing and maintains low transaction fees while offering near-similar level security offered by Bitcoins. As more on- and off-chain brands look to integrate crypto payment systems, analysts expect it to receive market-wide adoption, which rallies its price to new heights.
  • Expanding ecosystem: The Litecoin development team is currently working on upgrades to the Litecoin network that would it an edge over the competition, fuel its adoption, and re-ignite its value gain.
  • Growing use cases: Litecoin is expanding its usefulness from being a speculative investment product to a medium of exchange. Today, more than 10 major companies - including Twitch, HOSTKEY, APMEX, and Sling TV - accept LTC payments.
  • Higher reward to risk ratio: Litecoin is massively undervalued. It is also stabler and more resilient than most other cryptocurrencies. It is, therefore, less likely to collapse and burn investors when compared to equally promising but relatively new cryptocurrencies.

Risks to Litecoin (LTC) Investing

  • Bad reputation: Litecoin lost the crypto community's trust and investor interest in the altcoin after 2017 when Charlie Lee left. Ever since, not much has been done to reclaim this trust or win these investors back.
  • Lost Relevance: There is a general feeling in the crypto community that Litecoin has lost relevance. That even with higher throughput and low costs, it can’t overtake Bitcoin’s adoption rates. That its spot on most investor portfolios has been taken over by newer, faster, cheaper, and popular altcoins.
  • Overly reliant on Bitcoin performance: Litecoin, like most other cryptocurrencies, is overly reliant on Bitcoin price action. It rallies when BTC prices go up and crash when BTC prices dip.

Litecoin (LTC) Price

By the end of April 2013, data from CoinMarketCap indicates that Litecoin was selling for around $4.4. During the 2013 crypto market rally, however, Litecoin prices broke into a run - racing past $10 in the last week of November and peaking above $45 in the first week of December.

But the Chinese ban on Bitcoin and the crypto winter that ensued saw its prices dip and fall below the early 2013 prices. In January 2015, LTC hit its lowest price on record when it ended the day selling for $1.11. It traded around this level throughout 2015 and 2016 and only broke above $10 in early June 2017, right about the time when the market was readying for yet another price run.

The Bitcoin fork tore above the 2013 highs and reached $50 in the first week of July. It then doubled this price and broke above $100 on 5th December, before growing its early 2013 price by more than 9000% and establishing its first peak of $360, with a market cap of close to $20 Billion on 20th December 2017.

A day before hitting this peak, Charlie Lee announced his sudden departure from Litecoin and the liquidation of his LTCs. This, plus a reiteration of the Bitcoin ban by the Chinese government, had LTC token prices plummeting. In the 10 days that followed Litecoin lost more than two-thirds of this peak price and stormed into 2018 selling around $120.

The sustained value loss continued and by December 2018, Litecoin had lost 95% of its 2017 peak prices to sell for $23. Though it attempted a comeback rally in 2019, it couldn’t rise past $140 and quickly fell back below $50. Litecoin-only started rallying again during the early 2021 crypto market rally that saw it hit its current all-time high of $412 on 10th May.

One year later, Litecoin has wiped out most of these early 2021 gains and is currently trading around $70 - more than 80% below the peak price. It has a live market cap of $5 Billion and is ranked 18th on CoinMarketCap’s list of valuable cryptocurrencies.

Litecoin (LTC) Price Prediction

where to buy Litecoin

The general opinion among crypto analysts and investors is that Litecoin prices will eventually rally and reach new highs. They are confident that it will escape the current lows and reach new heights over the next few years. Much of this - they believe - will be made possible by the ongoing developments within the Litecoin network, rising adoption of blockchain technology, and a recovering crypto market.

By the end of 2023, conservative crypto price predictions from Changelly expect Litecoin to be worth $94.

The more optimistic predictions by analysts at Coinquora expect Litecoin token prices to rebound fast and reach $411 by the end of the year. These are also confident that LTC can reach $1000 by the end of 2025 and that it could rally past $1500 within the next 5 years.
